Skills — Management, Scholarship & Diplomacy — The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian
Complete skills guide for Prince Jerian — Management, Scholarship, Diplomacy scale, skill gates, and Legacy bypass.
Three core skills — Management, Scholarship, and Diplomacy — range from 0 to 20 and determine which dialogue and action options Jerian can access. Unlike percentage-based RPG checks, Prince Jerian uses hard gates: below the threshold, the option is unavailable (greyed out) unless you spend Legacy.
This design frustrates players who expect high Diplomacy to always unlock crowd-management choices. Skills are necessary but frequently insufficient — personality, relationships, and estate standing also filter options.
Management
Management governs internal administration, treasury decisions, provincial governance, and imperial Affairs execution. High Management unlocks efficient reform implementation and crisis resource allocation during events like treasury shortfalls or rebellion response.
Prioritize Management if you pursue reformer routes requiring bureaucratic restructuring or if Cornelius's governance lessons resonated with your playstyle.
Scholarship
Scholarship covers theology, academic policy, historical knowledge, and university-related scenes. Critical for Crisis of Traditions (university relic research) and Old/New Faith theological debates.
Jerian caught reading Scripture as a child (Justice and Compassion) foreshadows Scholarship's importance — priests monopolize interpretation, but imperial Scholarship can challenge clergy dogma.
Diplomacy
Diplomacy handles public speeches, negotiations, and cross-estate mediation. The Chapter 2 crowd scene is the most discussed Diplomacy gate — players with Diplomacy 12 still report locked unified-speech options due to missing personality or estate prerequisites.
Before blaming insufficient Diplomacy, check Will/Blood balance, bourgeoisie loyalty, and whether earlier promises contradicted your intended speech.
Skill Growth and Decrease
Skills increase through education choices, Year-Long Affairs (Finest Instructors), and specific event outcomes. Decrease is rare but documented — avoid neglecting training during childhood scenes.
Legacy expenditure: when a critical option requires Diplomacy 14 and you have 12, spending Legacy unlocks it once. Plan Legacy accumulation through Family Tree Affairs if you run skill-light builds.
